Every dog has its day. For the dogs that like to dress up for Halloween, it was yesterday.
The UCA Humane Society held its second pet Halloween costume contest at the student amphitheater. The event was open to every type of pet, but only dogs participated.
Entry was $5, with all contest proceeds and donations going to the Faulkner and Pulaski County Humane Societies, the HAWK Center and Sunrise Riders.
The dogs came in a variety of costumes, including a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, a taco, a dinosaur and an astronaut. Awards were given out for categories such as funniest, scariest, most creative, best group and best overall.
The overall winner was “Sandog Bullock,” whose name and costume referred to actress Sandra Bullock‘s role as an astronaut in the recent movie “Gravity.” The dog, a husky–chow mix, and is no stranger to the costume business — she won the contest last year as well.
“She likes to dress up. We do a lot of charity dog shows and she loves it,” owner Vickie Wyeth said. “I think the most important thing to realize is that she’s a shelter dog. She is an older dog and there are more like her stuck in shelters.”
Wyeth received a $25 gift certificate to Pet Country along with several ribbons and rewards for her dog.
The Humane Society’s goal is to provide better homes and lives for animals and to educate the community on animal issues. The organization can be contacted here.
