Book Fair Hosted To Support Community

A Scholastic book fair opened in Mashburn Hall on Oct. 3 and 6 for the College of Education to reach out to the community in more ways than one.

Three campus-related groups helped to sponsor this year’s book fair: Kappa Delta Pi, Teachers of Tomorrow and the Collegiate Middle Level Association. It was also co-sponsored by Mary Cawein.

When a public school hosts a book fair, the profits are usually used towards funding the library.

The College of Education has no library of its own, so the profits are going to the community. All profits from the book fair are being divided between the three sponsors with the intention of performing community service and pursuing other good works among the local Central Arkansas area.

“Education majors, when they become teachers, have to provide most or all of the books for their classroom, so this is a good way to start,” senior, Kelly Gamelin said.

College of Education students organized and managed the book fair.

According to Scholastic’s website, “Reading for pleasure inside and outside of school has real and long-lasting benefits. It unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are.”

The variety of books to choose from were endless, with genres ranging from children’s fiction to teen reads.

“I bought this book because I collect Shopkins, and I bought this other one because I love superheroes and I’ve seen every episode of Wonder Woman,” Kara Baldwin said.
