In a new Q&A series, The Echo reporters ask Student Government Association candidates about their Spring 2016 campaigns. Elections will take place April 6-7 on Org Sync.
Q: Who are you and what are you running for?
My name is Ellen McKinnie and I am running for Executive Vice President.
Q: Why did you decide to run for SGA?
I have always felt most natural serving people. Though I haven’t always enjoyed politics and government, I have always had a desire to work with people about subjects that matter and have powerful effects. To me, it is about staying true to who I am and who God made me to be. My passions and interests flow into a lot of political issues and discussions, and I desire to be a voice for people and unite them for the common good.
Q: Why should UCA students elect you?
If I am elected to SGA Exec, I will continue to fight for improving Wi-Fi, lobbying for housing renovations, and providing a representation for non-Greeks. I believe in respecting people and working toward common goals.
Q: Have you been in a leadership position before?
Yes! I have served as Freshman President, and I am currently serving as Sophomore President in SGA as well as the chair of the Senate Engagement/Advancement committee. So far we have passed amendments to the Constitution concerning Appointment and Diversity Committee, our nontraditional senator, SAFA reimbursements,The Big Event, and hours for freshman and sophomore spots. I also am or have served as a leader in Chi Alpha, a head delegate for Model UN, and a freshman leader in IDEAL.
Q: What’s something unusual about you?
When I was nine I had a turtle named Mac ‘n Cheese.
