Softball wins series against Nicholls

The UCA softball team won the series against the Nicholls State University Colonels this weekend March 28-29.

The teams first played March 28. NSU started out strong, getting two runs in the top of the first inning.

Sophomore shortstop Brooke Morris tripled to left center, allowing first baseman Payton Gremillion to score.

Junior second baseman Danielle Phillips reached on a walk and stole second, giving Morris the opportunity to steal home and go up 2-0.

It took the Bears a while to start the offense, but they got a spark by junior outfielder Sam Forrest.

Forrest hit a home run to left center to bring the Bears within one.

Junior catcher Jessie Taylor singled down the left field line, while sophomore outfielder Brianna Whisenhunt scored, tying the game 2-2.

The Colonels weren’t done on the offense, though.

Junior outfielder Haley Parkerson singled to the shortstop and redshirt sophomore infielder Cari Spain scored.

The Bears came into the bottom of the seventh inning down 3-2. UCA picked up the offense again when Taylor singled to left field and junior utility player Sarah Bigej and freshmen outfielder Brianna McArthur scored to put the Bears up 4-3 to win the game.

The doubleheader took place March 29. The Bears took the first game of the doubleheader 11-4.

UCA scored five runs in the first inning compared NSU’s one.

“If our offense is working like it can, the sky is the limit for this team,” sophomore outfielder Hannah Stirton said.

The Colonels started a comeback in the second inning, bringing the score to 5-3.

In the third and fourth, the Bears scored three times to increase their lead 8-3.

The Colonels scored again to make the score 8-4.

UCA finished the game in the sixth inning, running up the score by three more to make it 11-4.
NSU was unable to finish the comeback in the seventh inning.

The Bears lost the final game of the series 6-5. Both teams scored a run in the first inning.

The Colonels scored four runs in the second inning, while UCA responded in the third with four runs of its own.

NSU was able to pick up the game’s final run in the eighth inning when sophomore outfielder Jessica Taylor scored off of a double down the left field line by junior third basemen Alexis Huss.

UCA takes the field again against the Northwestern State University Lady Demons on April 3-4 in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
