A group of freshman and senior Honors College students will be raising awareness and collecting donations for a number of charitable causes in front of Short/Denney Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow.
Proceeds from the Campus IMPACT event will go to Our House, a homeless shelter in Little Rock, Feed My Starving Children, a Christian nonprofit that feeds malnourished children, and charity: water, a nonprofit the devotes 100 percent of donations to making clean water accessible in the developing world.
The students are working on the project under the instruction of Donna Bowman, associate dean of the Honors College. Bowman said a lot of thought has gone into planning and executing the event.
“The students have been on quite a journey this year thinking not only about the needs they see around them, but how to make sure the dollars they raise go the farthest they possibly can to change lives,” she said.
Freshman Sarah Gentry said that in addition to raising about $500 for each cause, the goal of Campus IMPACT is to inform the campus community about their charities.
“We just want to get the word out there,” Gentry said.
If you don’t have any spare change, the students are accepting umbrellas, new underwear, handsoap in individual containers and TI 83 and 84 calculators for the residents of the Our House shelter.
A post on the event’s Facebook page states that McAlister’s Deli will be providing sweet tea and “rewards” for students who contribute to a cause.
