The Sugar Bears fell short to the UMKC Kangaroos, 4-3, Sunday in their last home match of the season. The loss moved the Sugar Bears to 7-14.
“We played well in doubles,” coach Jeff Borengasser said. “We won the two and the three slots. I think the things we were doing well was being aggressive and trying to close in on the net. When we lost number one, it was from a few errors. It was critical, but they still played tough and played well.”
Taking those two sets in doubles for the Sugar Bears, sophomore Simona Horsikyan and junior Kazumi Otani defeated freshman Amelie Amsallem and junior Suzan Lisenby 8-4. Freshman Kristina Horsikyan and sophomore Sasha Ruocco defeated freshman Madeline Schulte sophomore Gabriela Pintos 8-5.
Freshman Kristina Horsikyan and sophomore Ruocco’s doubles’ record advances to 13-7 and Simona Horsikyan and Otani is now 11-9.
Juniors Eva Dalvai and Laura Bouet defeated Sugar Bears’ senior Allison Hartman and freshman Allison Murphy 8-6.
“We played OK,” Murphy said. “We just missed too many opportunity points at the right time. We couldn’t get them.”
Murphy said one of the main things that the team as a whole can improve on is approaching and getting to the net more. She said she felt the team did good overall.
The Roos outscored the Sugar Bears in singles, 4-2. The two sets were won by Ruocco, who defeated Lisenby 6-0, 6-3 and Kristina Horsikyan who defeated Amsallem 6-1, 6-1.
Borengasser said this match was an even match up match up for them.
“It looks like we’re really similar with them talent-wise, so it’s a good measuring stick for us,” he said. “It was good in some spots. Overall, we lost four and won two.”
Bouet defeated Murphy 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 Dalvai defeated Simona Horsikyan 6-3, 6-3 Schulte defeated Hartman 6-0, 6-1 Senior JillianYakominich defeated freshman Stephanie Gonzalez Valero 6-2, 6-0.
“I would say the key thing was the difference between winning and losing, just being able to keep concentration and focus throughout the match and keep playing smart the whole time,” Borengasser said.
Borengasser commented on the previous matches the team had on Friday and Saturday.
“I guess we had a long weekend,” he said. “A part of it is we’re a little worn out at this point, so we’re getting rest, having some good practices. We’re getting ready for our last to conference matches to finish out the year playing tough.”
With an overall record of 7-14 and 1-7 in conference play, the Sugar Bears head on the road to Louisiana Saturday to take on the Nicholls Colonels and Sunday to take on the Southeastern Louisiana University Lions.
