Men’s golf team prepares for conference tournament

by Zachary O'Neal

After an impressive, second place showing at the Ole Miss BancorpSouth Invitational, the men’s golf team shifts its attention this weekend and the Southland Conference Championship in McKinney, Texas.
“We’ve come off two good tournaments the past two weeks we played,” coach Richard Johnson said. “We’ve beaten all the competition that we will see in conference, except for Lamar. So we feel pretty good if we keep working hard the next couple of weeks and tighten up on a few things that we’re going to need on the golf course down there, which is going to be tough, we’ll be alright.”
Junior Austen Moix tied for third at the Ole Miss BancorpSouth Invitational, shooting five-under par in the two round tournament.
“I’m hoping we can win this tournament an advance to regionals,” Moix said. “I’m hoping to play well and finish top 5 and hopefully win.”
Johnson said the toughest three teams they will face are the Lamar Cardinals, Southeastern Louisiana Lions and the UT-Arlington Mavericks.
“They are the big three we’ll need to beat,” Johnson said.
Johnson said the biggest contributors on the team are freshman Pep Angles and Moix.
Johnson said Angles “has been the number one guy pretty much all year.”
“Moix has come along this spring fantastic,” he said. “He just had two top-five finishes in the last two weeks, which has been a real boost for us.”
Johnson said play has improved with each tournament and hopes the team peaks at the conference tournament.
I’m feeling good about my game going into conference and hoping to play well
Moix said that the season has been alright thus far, though Johnson said it has not as good as I thought it should be.
“It’s been a little inconsistent,” Johnson said. “Hopefully, we’ll work it out a little bit more and we’ll finish well.”
Johnson said the main thing the team can improve on is short game.
Moix said the team needs to do the things they have been doing. He added they just really need to get a good feel for each of their games and be very relaxed going into the tournament.
“I think the strong point of the team is as a group,” director of golf Ryke Dismuke said. “They want to perform well. It’s not like we have one guy that has to play well or two guys that has to play well. They all have to play well. When they come together as a team, they do well.”
The tournament will begin on Sunday and conclude on Wednesday, April 25.
