The Bears lost four games on the road over the weekend to conference opponents Texas State and Texas-San Antonio.
The Bears lost both games of a doubleheader to the Texas State Bobcats on Friday in San Marcos, Texas.
After being allowed only two hits and being shutout in a 2-0 loss in the opener, an error in the bottom of the fifth in the second game, allowed the winning run for the Bobcats in a 3-2 victory.
After Bobcats third baseman Carnline reached on a double, an error from Bears freshman third baseman Tiffany Roby on a sacrifice-bunt allowed Carnline to score the winning run.
The Bears were then defeated by the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday in San Antonio, Texas.
The Bears were allowed only two hits in the first game in a 3-0 loss.
A run in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Roadrunners a 2-1 victory in the finale.
A walk off RBI-double to left field by Garcia scored Bachman from second, who reached on single to start the inning.
The four losses made it seven straight conference losses for the Bears (27-17, 5-7 SLC) after starting the season 5-0 in conference play.
The Bears have fallen from first place to seventh in the conference standings as a result of the losing streak.
The Bears started the week with run-rule victories against the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes and the Jackson State Tigers.
The Bears defeated the Devilettes 9-0 in five innings, avenging a loss to them earlier this season in Itta Benna, Miss.
“Since we lost to them last time, it was good to get them back,” Boswell said. “And kind of set us up for the next couple of games. We just have to keep hitting and keep playing our defense.”
With just two innings of scoring throughout the whole game, the Bears scored four runs in the first inning and five in the fourth.
Pitching the whole game for seven strikeouts was junior Kelsie Armstrong.
“Glad to see us come out and have a couple of timely hits and a great starting pitching performance,” coach David Kuhn said.
Right from the start for the Bears in the bottom of the first, Beals got a hit to reach first. A fielding error by second baseman advanced Beals to second and junior designated player Melissa Bryant managed first. Junior Melanie Bryant followed up with a bunt to load the bases.
Avitia hit down the third baseline for the Bears’ first run. Roby’s grounder between third base and shortstop gave the Bears their second run as Melissa Bryant went home for the score. Boswell walked, Melanie Bryant came in for the unearned run. Senior right fielder Katie McGregor’s sacrifice fly to right brought in Avitia for the fourth run of the game.
The Bears managed the 4-run lead until they added five more to the board in the fourth inning, only allowing two hits and two runners on base.
The Bears played yesterday against the Hendrix Warriors. They host the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks today at 5 p.m. and host the Nicholls State Colonels this weekend.
Game one of the series is Friday at 6 p.m. The series finale is Saturday at noon.
