Bears, It’s Time To Step Up

UCA football is up and running with the beginning of the season.

The Bears are standing at 0-2, following a hard loss against OSU this past Saturday, 8-32.

Though the Bears left Samford with a hard loss and unfortunate injury for senior wide receiver Courtney Whitehead, season hopes are anything but bleak.

The Bears’ defense has proven to be an anchor this year, as well as a bevy of skillful players for the team’s disposal.

Special team players were able to block two extra points.

The outcome of the games has yet to tell the Bears’ true story so far. The team seem to be struggling with keeping up with opposing offenses.

Playing in front of an away crowd of 56,262, the Bears appeared to hold their own against excessive crowd noise and pressures of a packed stadium.

The Bears stayed on the Oklahoma State Cowboys, only allowing one touchdown and a field goal in the first half.

A few more minor adjustments and focused practices should be enough to get the team headed in the right direction.

The Bears will will face their next opponent Northwestern State University, following a bye week.

This bye week could provide a bit of rest and extra time to focus on the team’s problems and create solutions while the bulk of the season is still ahead of them.

Thankfully, fans now have have a clearer idea about the extent of the injury to Whitehead because of the similar injury suffered this past Sunday to Dallas Cowboys’s star wide receiver Dez Bryant.

It is a 4-6 week injury and Whitehead has already undergone surgery. His recovery process looks no more than six weeks. Fans may see a medical red shirt appear on the sidelines.
