Bear Chat With Jonathan Davis

by Spencer Griffin

Sophomore center fielder Jonathan Davis has collected many achievements already for the Bears’ baseball team.
He was recently named the Southland Conference hitter of the week.
This came with the Bears’ sweep of Nichols State. Davis had a .769 batting average for hitting 10 of 13.
He scored seven runs, had three RBIs and stole four bases during the series.
He was named Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and Freshman All-American in 2011.
He was a preseason all-SLC selection before this season.
Davis led the team last season in batting average (.350), home runs (5) and stolen bases (21).
He had 30 RBI and a .522 slugging percentage.
His 21 stolen bases were also tied for fourth-most in school history and ranked him 37th in the nation last season.
Davis played baseball, basketball and football at Camden Fairvew High School.
He was a all-state selection in all three sports. He was also named to the Golden Triangle Team and was an all-area team selection.
During his senior year in high school, Davis hit three home runs and had a .419 batting average with 19 stolen bases.
Davis stole three bases during one game against UAPB, which ties him for the most stolen bases in a game in school history.
So far this season, Davis has hit for a .336 average and has 27 RBI.
Davis has 46 hits with 10 doubles and two triples.
He leads the team in stolen bases with 15, and in runs scored with 32, which is good enough for fifth in the conference.

When did you start playing baseball?
When I was five.

Is there a reason you wear the number three?
Yeah, I came here wanting number one, but a senior had it so I chose to wear number three.

You were named Freshman All-American, Freshman of the Year and preseason all-SLC, is it hard to stay focused and humble with all the accolades in your first year?
Not really because it was something I was taught as a kid, but it stayed with me. It is a pressure, but I just try to have fun.

What was your favorite memory of your freshman year?
My first two college at bats. My first pitch I got hit in the head and my second at bat I hit a homerun.

What was the toughest part of last season?
I would probably say playing the season with injuries and the length of the season. I wasn’t used to playing that many games.

Did you ever think about playing a different sport in college instead of baseball?
I thought about playing football.

What made you pick baseball?
I thought I would have better success playing baseball.

Which do you enjoy more, getting the big hits or base running/stealing bases?
I think of course getting the big hits because you feel good when you’re successful and helping the team win.

Is there a player you think your style of play mirrors or someone you try to play like?
I would probably say McCutchen for the Pirates.

Who is your favorite athlete?
Derrick Rose.

Who is your favorite sports team?
The Chicago Bulls.

What is your favorite pitch to get?
A 2-0 fastball.

What is your least favorite pitch to get?
A backdoor curveball.

What is your major?
My major is Management Information Systems. My plans are to hopefully play professional baseball, but if that doesn’t work out I haven’t really decided.
