A proposed amendment to By-Law E of the SGA Consttution, that would cut Student Activity Fee Allocation funding for student activities that promote the recruitment of prospective students, failed 16 to 20, on Jan. 30.
Vice-President of Finance, Jack Phillips who proposed the amendment, said that events that should be funded are activities that directly benefit UCA students and not high school students..
Junior class representative, Jake Logan asked what would happen to band concerts for high school students that have been allocated by SGA in the past.
“They would not have money allocated because it’s a program for high school students,” Phillips said.
Senator-at-large, Michael Murphy dissapproved of the proposed amendment stating that there are many benefits to funding activities for students outside of UCA.
Senior class president, TJ Beringer, approved of the amendment.
“High school students are not the ones who pay the fees,” Beringer said. “It’s important for us to keep the money that our students are paying in the hands of our students.”
Other SGA members dissaproved of the amendment because of its vague wording.
Phillips encouraged groups who seek funding through SGA whose purpose is to recruit, to focus on fundrasing and raising registration costs in order to have more money for on-campus events that UCA students can take advantage of.
