In a new Q&A series, The Echo reporters ask Student Government Association candidates about their Spring 2016 campaigns. Elections will take place April 6-7 on Org Sync.

Q: Who are you and what are you running for?

Laurie Nick

My name is Laurie Nick, and I am running for the Student Government Association Vice President of Finance.

Q: Why did you decide to run for SGA?

This past year, I had the privilege of serving UCA’s students as the Student Government Association College of Education Representative. I discovered I have a deeper passion for nurturing student success than I ever could have imagined. Throughout my term, most days I found myself doing SGA-related tasks more than anything, and I immensely enjoyed every second of it. I love being able to represent a student body on a campus that fights for student success in every way imaginable. I am running for SGA because I have a passion for advocating on the behalf of students, and I desire to devote my collegiate life to the betterment of the UCA community as the Vice President of Finance.

Q: Why should UCA students elect you?

UCA students should elect me for the Vice President of Finance because of my passion to ensure student success. Success in college is not graduating college with a 4.0 GPA and getting a prestigious internship; success is defined by how much a person can achieve his or her full potential. I plan on ensuring every student has the opportunity to achieve this success to the greatest extent possible. Furthermore, my strongest asset is focus, which sets me apart from other candidates. I strive for efficiency in all aspects of my life, which has helped me develop impeccable organizational skills. I do not take responsibilities lightly, and I am determined to never fall short of 110 percent. I sincerely care about the well-being of the students of UCA, which makes serving students my number one priority. I cannot wait to utilize my passion towards the betterment of UCA.

Q: Have you been in a leadership position before?

I have served in several leadership positions at UCA including the following: Student Government Association College of Education Representative, Student Government Association Historian, Honors Center Society (Honors Council) Co-Curricular Chair, College of Education Ambassador, Student Orientation Staffer, and Catholic Campus Ministry Small Group Bible Study Leader.

Q: What’s something unusual about you?

My favorite time of day is 4:37 a.m. when I wake up to work out because I am a triathlete who swims, bikes and runs at ridiculous hours of the morning to train before classes.
